Community Event:
Reentry Resource and Network Symposium
​

The Westside Branch of the NAACP will be hosting a “Reentry Resource and Networking Symposium” on June 30th, at  Sankofa Art and Culture Center 5820 W. Chicago Ave.

Doors will open at 10:00am to begin the networking and introductions of the service providers present and welcoming the formerly incarcerated men and women that may attend. We will hear presentations from a representative from each service provider in attendance.

Some of the providers giving presentations are: Cabrini Green Legal Aid, Westside Health Authority, National Alliance for the Empowerment of the Formerly Incarcerated, St. Leonard’s ministry, Michael Barlow Center, First Defense Legal Aid and others.

Contact Benny Lee to table, assist participants in getting there and networking with others.

Community Event:
It's Now: Mural Painting + BBQ Celebration
3346 W. 16th St. in North Lawndale
The building on 3346 W. 16th has been empty for more than two years. It has been gifted to Benny Lee, the co-founder of the National Alliance for the Empowerment of the Formerly Incarcerated to create a community museum. To inaugurate this process, a new community mural will be painted on the building. The mural has been designed by artists at Stateville Prison in the Prison + Neighborhood Arts Project.

Mural Painting from 11am-4pm: 

We are calling out for community-spirited individuals to help paint a mural! Food, paints, and drinks will be provided (professional painting experience is not necessary). To sign up and volunteer, please contact Joe Troutman at jtrout4@uic.edu!

A speak out on mass incarceration

Hear from people directly affected by incarceration, share ideas for action and more at this community event hosted by Cabrini Green Legal AidCommunity Renewal SocietyGrowing HomePrecious Blood Ministry of ReconciliationStoryCorps and the Transformative Justice Law Project of Illinois.

Colette Payne (Cabrini Green Legal Aid) and Marlon Chamberlain (Community Renewal Society) will emcee.

Highlights include:

  • Audio stories recorded in partnership with StoryCorps

  • Panel discussion on “Barriers to Life”

  • Peace Circles facilitated by Precious Blood Ministry of Reconciliation

  • Opportunity to share and connect with advocacy organizations

Join the Northeastern IL University community a free conference on issues of incarceration and criminalization. pen to the community from 8:30-5pm on the main campus student union at 5500 N. St. Louis Ave.  
Workshops on issues such as expungement, restorative justice, art and incarceration, women and incarceration and more taking place at 11am, 1pm, and 2pm. There will be a final panel considering the question of mass incarceration as modern day slavery from 3-5pm.
